“목숨 걸고 블로깅?” 美 NYT의 경고

꽤 오래전에 위 링크의 글을 집중 소개한 바 있습니다. 블로깅하다가 건강을 잃을 수 도 있다는 경고였습니다. 저야 직업이 글쓰는 일이고, 평생 글을 쓰는 작업을 친구 삼기로 했습니다만, 그렇지 않고 일반인들 입장에선 지금도 많은 분들이 블로깅을 하면서 서서히 수명이 줄고 있을지도 모를 일이지요. ㅎㅎㅎ

그런데 오늘 정말 심각한 이야기가 하나 나왔습니다. 한 유명 블로거가 블로깅을 했다고 익명의 네티즌에게 '죽이겠다'는 협박을 받은 겁니다. 미국에선 블로깅을 잘못 하다간 정말 총에 맞아 죽을 수도 있겠다는 생각이 듭니다.

국내에서도 '살인'은 아니지만 일부 대형 포털이나 스타트업 관계자들이 부정적인 의견을 내 놓은 블로거들을 악플로 맹공격하는 것을 많이 봐 왔기 때문에 남의 이야기가 아니겠지요. 저 같은 경우 반대 세력에게 블로그 서버 해킹도 당하는 마당에... ㅋㅋㅋ 그래 봐야 아파치로그와 XE 로그분석기 손 안이겠지만^^

미국 IT/차세대웹/스타트업 소식을 전하는 블로그로서 절대적인 영향력을 발휘하고 있는 테크크런치( http://www.techcrunch.com/ ) 창업자 '마이클 아링턴(Michael Arrington)'은 2월부터 글쓰기를 완전히 쉬면서 재충전의 시간을 갖기로 했다는 소식입니다. 해변에서 부담없이 푹 쉬면서 앞으로 자신이 할 일에 대해 생각해 보겠다는 뜻이죠. 다보스의 World Economic Forum 관련 포스팅이 그가 쉬기 전 마지막 글이 될 것으로 보입니다. 사실 테크크런치의 실무에서 완전히 그만두는지는 명확치는 않지만 상당수 언론들은 '신중한 quit' 에 무게를 두고 있습니다. 개인적으로는 글쓰기는 중단하고 CEO로만 남을 것 같아 보입니다.

그가 2월에 쉬는 이유는 너무 간단합니다. 각종 악플이나 익명 욕설이야 블로거 입장에선 참을 만 합니다. 그런데 총을 들고 살해하겠다는 위협까지 받은 것이지요. 전화, e메일, 블로그 댓글 등으로도 숨통을 조여 왔다고 합니다. 가족과 직원이 걱정 되어 하루에 2000달러짜리 사설 보안업체 관계자들을 사무실과 집에 배치하기도 했습니다. 일주일 동안 부모님 집에 숨어 있다시피 했다고도 하네요. 이럴 때는 경찰도 별로 도움이 안되지요... 이쯤 되면 미국도 거의 막장 수준입니다. 웹사이트/블로그에 글을 쓴다고 해서 살해 위협이라니.

블로깅 하다가 죽을 수도, 아니 최소한 갑자기 뒤에서 날아오는 짱돌을 맞을 수도 있습니다. 삐딱선을 타고 있는 요주의 인물들이 한국의 블로고스피어에도 열혈 블로거인 것처럼 가장한 채 활동하고 있지요. 여러분들도 늘 조심하세요~

I always assumed that our work and integrity would speak for itself. But as we’ve grown and become more successful the attacks have also grown […] Luckily my tolerance for verbal abuses has risen proportionately to our growth, so I can handle most of the verbal abuse thrown our way […] But like I said, I draw the line at being spat on. It’s one step away from something far more violent.

At over $2,000 a day we couldn’t keep paying for security indefinitely. And the police were helpful but couldn’t do much based on the threats until he acted […] So for a week I was literally in hiding with my parents at their home […] Seeing my parents fear for their lives and not understand how or why their son was in this position changed me, made me a much less forgiving person in general.

I’ve decided the right thing to do is take some time off and get a better perspective on what I’m spending my life doing. I’ll be taking most of February off from writing, and decide what the best future for me is while sitting on a beach somewhere far away from my iPhone and laptop. I’ll be continuing to write this week and cover news from the World Economic Forum in Davos, then I’ll take time off starting next week.
